After a few months of beta releases, the all-inclusive note-taking service Evernote has launched a release version of its app for Android phones, making it very easy to snap pictures, jot notes or record audio notes for yourself.

The app’s smoothed out its kinks, bugs and looks over multiple beta releases, and does a fairly good job of integrating your Evernote account with your phone’s functions.

Evernote for Android — No Native App Yet

Evernote already has a native iPhone application and promises to release an Android client in the future. I actually contacted Evernote in early February to ask if they planned to develop a native app for Android and was told, “We do not currently have formal plans for an Android application and no definitive date has been set.”

I don’t know what has changed in the past 30 days since receiving that message, but I’m happy to know that an Android app is coming someday. I’ll be happy with an optimized Evernote Mobile for now, which is one of the tools I use on my G1 to increase my personal productivity.

Evernote — Funded to 2010

We couldn’t have thought of a better way to end 2008: on New Year’s Eve, we officially closed a $4.5 million round of funding from Troika Dialog. That’s enough runway to keep us going strong into 2010 and, with a little more hard work, indefinitely. Our users deserve all the credit here: you told us how to make a great service and your obvious enthusiasm for Evernote is what got us this deal. Thank you! I’m officially taking a week off from worrying about money before going right back to securing some additional financing to fund our more ambitious plans (Evernote for Cats, Evernote Zero G, Evernote eXtreme Sportz Gel).

Androinica Review: Remember everything with 3banana Notes | Google Android Blog

Evernote’s G1-optimized website is only a few days old, but 3banana is already offering it competition in the note taking department. Though both products are good memory-aid services, 3banana has one advantage that Evernote currently doesn’t offer: native Android support.

3banana Notes is a free note-taking app that syncs between Android and an online account. The CEO of the company that developed the app explains it was created so “users could quickly jot down a thought or tag a photo on their Android smart phone with as few keystrokes as possible, and then sync and share those notes wirelessly and effortlessly.”

Users can snap a photo and then add a text note explaining its significance. That note can then be synced or shared with friends. A trip to the grocery could help you discover a new wine you’re not sure about purchasing, so snap a photo and attach the note “Look into this brand.” Interesting books, ideas gained from newspapers, sporting events, tech conventions, or any other situation could be cause to create a note that will help remember thoughts at a later time.

Aside from jotting down photo and/or text notes easily, 3banana can also:

  • Reverse sync so notes made on the computer appear on the Android phone
  • Label notes to provide category separation
  • Share notes via Facebook, Twitter, or E-mail.

3banana is available in the “Productivity” section of the Android Market. Register for an online account at 3banana.com

YouNote and Evernote have won me over by making the iPhone and iPod Touch a powerful note-taking tool for anyone who frequently jots down thoughts and returns to them later. There’s no absolute winner in this match, since each application takes a different note-taking approach, but by the review’s end, we’re guessing you’ll have crowned one over the other.

Evernote Discusses Vision, Security, Privacy — San Jose Mercury News

Q You do image recognition, handwriting recognition and you are working on audio recognition. How has technology advanced to make this possible not only in a browser but in a hand-held device?

A A bunch of things have happened. Recognition technologies have advanced a long way. A lot was done by Stepan and his team. He started a company called ParaGraph that focused on handwriting recognition and 3-D graphics. It was sold to Silicon Graphics. Then he started a few other companies, including ParaScript, which currently handles the reading of mail and checks in the United States and other countries.

Q What about networking and computing infrastructure?

A This whole service couldnt have worked five years ago. It would have been immensely hard to build something that automatically syncs to every single computer — either Mac or Windows, as well as to the Web and to different kinds of phones in real time — that had data stored on a data center in the cloud and locally on your computer or device and was reliable without you having to think about it.

Q Being someones brain is pretty personal. What kind of thinking has the company done about privacy?

A Quite a lot, and about security as well. It is really up to users to decide if they want the world to see all their thoughts, or if they want to keep things private, or if they want a mix. You can publish everything and you can synchronize everything, or you can use Evernote without synchronizing it and choose to encrypt everything and keep it encrypted somewhere on your hard drive. We support all that kind of stuff. Of course, you are compromising some kind of functionality if you only use Evernote on your computer. You cant effortlessly access your notes from anywhere and of course you cant share them with your friends.

Q What about the data itself?

A The first thing is, your memories are yours. Thats really important to us. We are not going to sell any of your information to advertisers or any third parties. And we are not going to charge you to get access to information. Any memory you have for the rest of your life, its yours. We have full import-export capabilities.

So why is it such a special tool you ask…why do I, as well as the majority of other Evernote users have so much passion & faith in the product. Well firstly, the company have been in the information business for a while now, they’ve built a solid reputation & it’s clear they aren’t going to dissapear without a fight. Secondly, they have a loyal user base which has only grown since they’re expansion onto the web. Thirdly, innovation – they have really mastered it & hopefully won’t be losing their touch any time soon.

With all the beauty of this innovative tool there are still things I’d like to see included:

1. Copy & Paste text from text in the images. Or the ability to literally see a txt version of the image if you see what i mean.

2. More media types – no not people – I mean audio, video, word docs, zip files etc..

3. Even better & faster OCR.

4. Ability to edit notes on the iphone – unfortunately you can’t currently edit previous notes on the iphone.

5. Sharing a notebook amongst peers/friends not publicly.

6. Know how many other people bookmarked the same link – possibly even be able to search for links similar to delicious – except without knowing who bookmarked what.

6. Tree like structure to folders or notebooks – so you have one notebook within another…although if you’re tag man person, you’ll be very comfortable.

Evernote Passes 500,000 Registered Users, Most of Them On The iPhone

Filed under: evernote — Tags: — sync @ 10:49 pm

Some apps wander around the wilderness for a while until they can find the perfect home. For Evernote, that home is the iPhone. The note-taking, picture-capturing, voice-recording, handwriting-recognizing universal memory service has been under development for years and launched last February in private beta on the PC. But it wasn’t until May 29 that it debuted on the iTunes store as an iPhone app. That’s when it started to take off.

Now Evernote has 512,000 registered users, who have created 13.8 million notes. In addition to the iPhone app, Evernote offers its service thorugh a PC client, a Mac client, a Website, and other mobile devices. The iPhone app is the most popular, being used 57% of the time. It is followed by the Web (51%), the PC client (32%), the Mac (28%), and other mobile clients bring up the rear (8%). These numbers add up to more than 100 because nearly half of all users access the service via more than one app.

The PC and Mac clients are the most fully-featured, yet it is the iPhone app that gave Evernote its critical mass. Perhaps that’s because the iPhone app lets you take pictures using the camera, append a note and save it to your Evernote page, where it is archived and searchable. It is more difficult to capture memories with a laptop.

Evernote’s most powerful feature is text extraction from images, and it must be seen to be believed. Evernote will quickly, and very accurately, show you images that contain text when you search your notes. This makes it easy to capture notes from whiteboard sessions, or documents, or anything, just by using your iPhone’s camera to snap a picture and send it to your Evernote account. Then you can search on any key words or key phrases to find the image containing that text. Imagine using this to create a database of business cards, purchase receipts, recipes from magazines or cards, concert tickets, or just about anything.

Some of those disgruntled users became vocal, of course, starting a petition to save Google Notebook.

Evernote and Eye-Fi Open Up New Possibilities for the Digital Camera

Evernote and Eye-Fi Open Up New Possibilities for the Digital Camera
Digital Snapshots Containing Text Can Be Instantly Captured, Synched and Made Searchable Across Desktops, the Web and Mobile Phones
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA and SUNNYVALE, CA —(December 10, 2008)— Evernote and Eye-Fi today announced a partnership to transform the digital camera into an essential tool for combating information overload and helping people remember everyday details. Users of Eye-Fi’s wireless SD memory card can now automatically upload photos from their digital camera directly into their Evernote accounts, where images containing printed or handwritten text will be indexed and made searchable.

Evernote, a service designed to help individuals remember everything, adds the images to the user’s collection of notes and memories and makes them available on their desktop, the Web or a mobile phone, where they can be searched and organized.

“Evernote helps consumers capture and search for anything they want to remember from their real and digital lives — from business cards and white board notes, to wine labels and receipts,” said Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote. “There has never been a simpler way to get high-quality images into Evernote than with a point-and-shoot digital camera. It literally takes one step: snap the photo and Eye-Fi does the rest automatically.”

Beginning today, users can benefit from the speed and simplicity of uploading hi-resolution photos through Eye-Fi and tap into Evernote’s convenience of searching and cataloging the images. Now, no extra steps are required between taking a picture and having it become automatically searchable through Evernote.

“Eye-Fi aims to make it easier to capture and share life’s memories,” said Jef Holove, CEO of Eye-Fi. “Now we’re helping people use their cameras to capture everyday information they want to remember. The combined power of Eye-Fi and Evernote means that now anyone who owns a digital camera can have a photographic memory.”

Eye-Fi’s products range from $79-$129 and can be purchased at Apple Retail Stores, Best Buy and major online retailers. Users can subscribe to Evernote at www.evernote.com. For more information, please visit www.eye.fi/evernote.

Sunnyvale, CA.—July 10, 2008—Evernote, a web service with mobile and desktop clients designed to allow users to easily capture and find information, memories, and content in any environment, today announced its native iPhone application, Evernote for iPhone, which will be available free of charge on the Apple App Store at launch today.

“Developing a native iPhone version of Evernote has been a great experience and we’re thrilled that the application will be available directly from the Apple App Store,” said Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote. “The iPhone is an ideal platform for Evernote’s concept of an external brain and thanks to powerful features such as location awareness, camera support, and audio recording, the iPhone is now the perfect way to remember everything.”

Evernote: Now Open to Everyone
Evernote Launches Public Beta of Popular Cloud and Desktop ‘Memory-Capturing’ Service; Offers Free and Premium Subscriptions
Sunnyvale, Calif., June 24, 2008 – Evernote, a web service with full-featured desktop and mobile clients designed to allow users to easily capture and find information, memories, and content in any environment, today announced its public availability and a new subscription model. Access to Evernote is now available to everyone, without the need for a prior invitation, on the Web, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Windows Mobile, and other mobile devices. Over 120,000 users have participated in Evernote’s invitation-only closed beta in the past four months.

Evernote allows users to capture information in any environment using virtually any device or platform, and makes this information accessible and searchable at any time, from anywhere. The product’s innovative recognition and synchronization technology allows users to capture their memories as text, snapshots, digital ink or audio and then easily find and share them. Printed and handwritten text within images is made fully searchable and all notes are automatically synchronized between the network and local devices.

In addition to opening up the service, Evernote also announced details of its new subscription pricing. Premium users will benefit from an expanded 500MB monthly upload allowance, priority access to image recognition servers, stronger security options, and premium support. Evernote will charge $5 per month, or $45 for a full year, for Premium service. Free users will get a 40MB monthly upload allowance and have access to all clients and tools. These limits apply only to information added in a given month, not to the total amount of data that a user can store.

The latest release also features a completely redesigned Evernote Web user interface and a new version of the company’s Web Clipper bookmarklet. The new Web Clipper allows users to instantly save the contents and links of a webpage into their Evernote accounts, a feature popular among bloggers, researchers, and online shoppers.

Other features include public notebook Facebook and blog integration, PDF support, encryption, and automatic synchronization of notes, to-do lists, snapshots, and audio notes among all Evernote clients. In recent weeks, Evernote has also released major upgrades to its Windows and Mac versions.

“Our goal is to make Evernote an extension of human memory. Since memorable things can happen at any time, online or in the real world, we realized that we needed to go beyond traditional web 2.0 and develop native clients for the major computer and phone platforms, in addition to a powerful web service. The response has been amazing,” said Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote. “Opening up the beta is a huge step for the company. We’re excited to introduce the world to Evernote, and we hope it becomes the place to store everyone’s memories for months, years, and decades to come.”
