Comparison of notetaking software – Wikipedia

Filed under: Online Notetaking, software, web apps — sync @ 7:51 pm

Interesting to see that Wikipedia has a whole section on Notetaking, including a comparison of a number of notetaking software and websites.

Here is what Wikipedia says about Notetaking:

Notetaking is the practice of recording information captured from a transient source, such as an oral discussion at a meeting, or a lecture. Notes of a meeting are usually called minutes. The format of the initial record may often be informal and/or unstructured. One common format for such notes is shorthand, which can allow large amounts of information to be put on paper very quickly. Notes are frequently written in notebooks, though all sorts of paper may sometimes be used: for instance, some people like to usePost-It notes. Notetaking is an important skill for students, especially at the college level. Many different formats are used to structure information and make it easier to find and to understand, later. Computers, particularly tablet PCs and personal digital assistants (PDAs) are beginning to see wide use as notetaking devices. In some contexts, such as college lectures, the main purpose of taking notes may be to implant the material in the mind; the written notes themselves being of secondary importance.

TiddlyWiki – a reusable non-linear personal web notebook

TiddlyWiki is a single html file which has all the characteristics of a wiki – including all of the content, the functionality (including editing, saving, tagging and searching) and the style sheet. Because it’s a single file, it’s very portable – you can email it, put it on a web server or share it via a USB stick.

But it’s not just a wiki! It has very powerful plugin capabilities, so it can also be used to build new tools. You have full control over how it looks and behaves. For example, TiddlyWiki is already being used as:

A personal notebook

A GTD (“Getting Things Done”) productivity tool

A collaboration tool

For building websites (this site is a TiddlyWiki file!)

For rapid prototyping

…and much more!

You can import and export data to and from all sorts of places. Check out some of the Examples of TiddlyWiki in use, and the Features that are available.

Circus Ponies NoteBook – Organization for a creative mind

Circus Ponies –

With NoteBook, you organize your information naturally, using a familiar notebook interface, complete with pages and tabs, sections and subsections. Add notes andother text. Drag in files and folders. Even “clip” web research, mail messages and other content into your Notebooks without leaving the application you’re working in. Annotate your information with diagrams and sketches, highlighting and keywords. Take voice-annotated notes that you can download to your iPod. And protect private thoughts with passwords, covers, and encryption.

Find anything instantly using NoteBook’s patented Multidex™, that locates information based on what you remember about it: a name or number, the date you entered it, a keyword you assigned, even any combination. Then share it all by creating PDFs or publishing your Notebooks to the web, including direct web export to your MobileMe account.

Voodoopad Evernote Comparison | Social Signal

Filed under: voodoopad — Tags: — sync @ 9:20 am

On the other hand Voodoopad has one MAJOR advantage over Evernote: data import and export. Right now there’s no easy way for a Mac user to get data in or out of Evernote.  The Windows client offers an option to import databases, export a note or notebook to HTML. (Both Mac and Windows users can send notes by e-mail.)  While Evernote suggests that export might become available to Mac users in the future, for now the only exit path is via Windows. That makes switching TO Evernote a big pain (I’ll have to export my Voodoopads, then run Evernote on Windows in Parallels to get the data in….and why does that sound like a nightmare?) and switching to a future app just as annoying.

Livescribe raises $10M new funding — Notetaking Technology

Filed under: web apps — Tags: — sync @ 8:43 pm

Smartpen maker Livescribe Inc. said it raised more than $10 million in new funding.

The Oakland company — which was named the Mobile Technology winner in the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal’s Emerging Tech awards in December — makes a combination pen, digital audio recorder and handheld computer.

The 1.3-ounce gadget has been turning traditional note-taking into what the pen’s inventor, Jim Marggraff, likes to call “paper-based computing.”

The round was led by U.K.-based Lionhart Investments and Vantage Point Partners, which has an office in San Bruno.

The company has now raised more than $40 million.

Yahoo Lets Users Take Notes

Filed under: yahoo search pad — Tags: — sync @ 8:36 am

The service, Search Pad, is similar to Google’s new SearchWiki, which allows users to promote and take notes on search results they find useful and view them later. Ask.com, a search engine owned by IAC/InterActiveCorp, has a “MyStuff” feature that is similar. Google recently stopped new development on a service called Google Notebook that was designed to help users store Web pages for research as well.

Search Pad is trying to distinguish itself from these offerings — which haven’t been widely adopted — by being more seamless and requiring users to do less work. Rather than wait for a user to save a result, it tries to detect if a user is doing research based on their search behavior, like doing similar searches over again. If so, it will ask the user if they want to begin taking notes. If they say yes, it will start pulling all the relevant Web pages they just visited into a digital notepad, which users can add text to, save to their Yahoo accounts, email and print.

Yahoo Search Pad Uses Search To Help Your Brain Take Notes

Filed under: yahoo search pad — Tags: — sync @ 8:34 am

Yahoo is testing a new note-taking application integrated into search called Yahoo Search Pad. This isn’t publicly available yet, but look for it to become a feature of Yahoo’s search engine in the future. I’ve played around with a beta version. Unlike other note-taking tools, such as Google Notebook, Search Pad doesn’t force you to go somewhere else to take notes. It also tries to figure out when you might be in research mode, and records and groups all of your searches for you.

Sticky Notes in Review: A Good Kinda Sticky for the iPhone? | TouchMyApps

Stickies makes use of a very handy idea indeed, but I find the whole process of posting a sticky note to involve one too many steps. If you could set the note as a wallpaper within the Stickies app and not have to make your way to the camera roll, it wouldn’t be as troublesome. What if you had tons of photos in your roll? You would then have to scroll your way through a whole bunch of pics just to find your note. If you wanted to change your sticky note, you must repeat this once again. If there was a way to simplify this process as well as have the option of notes automatically cycle through every ‘X’ amount of minutes, the app could be much more user friendly and practical.

Stickies can definitely serve to be a useful app. On more than one occasion, I was reminded of something I needed to do simply by waking my iPhone. At the end though, the whole idea seems more like a workaround as opposed to an app that just worked straight out of the box. With all the steps required to display a note and change it, I will probably be saving Stickies for things I absolutely must get done. At $0.99, you will still find a handy little app, albeit one that is somewhat troublesome.

Have you ever thought… “I wish I could write a sticky note and save it as a wallpaper”? Of course you haven’t. But now that we mention it, wouldn’t that be nice?

Just think of all the things you could use it for:

- “Front of Mind” Reminders… see it whenever you unlock your phone

- Notes to Self

- Quick shopping lists that you can view without even unlocking your phone

- Things you want to memorize

- Notes of self-encouragement

- Sappy love notes from your (geeky) spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend/significant other/better half/life partner/what have you

Also, you can email the note, assign a note to a contact and see it when they call, and do anything else you can with a photo. The possibilities are literally finite.
