reQall iPhone and iPod Touch To-Do and Productivity Application Review – DIGTD – Making You More Productive

reQall is one of the most effective Apple iPhone and iPod Touch productivity applications currently available for users to bring into their day-to-day life.

It effectively combines several different organizational features into a single, extremely handy app. The program is completely free of charge as well and this is definitely something that should propel it to the forefront of similar productivity systems.

The application acts as a to-do list coupled with a quality reminder service. reQall lets users either speak or type their tasks into their iPhone and then store it for a later time.

The reminder function can be set for specific dates, hours and minutes before signaling users that it’s time for them to check off or start carrying out an action.

Reminders can be issued through various options including email, text message, instant message, calendar alert or a computerized voice. The flexibility inherent in using these functions is what makes the program really shine however and users are likely to return to reQall just to play around with the various options.

“Information overload” is the call-word for the modern lifestyle. Even with the help of calendars, alarms, notes and other memory aids, it’s easy to lose track of what you need to do in the swirl of what’s going on. The latest tool I’ve found to help out is called ReQall.

The brain-child of Sunil Vemuri, an MIT Ph.D. who focused his dissertation on memory, ReQall keeps track of notes you send to it by email, instant message or, best of all, a dial-in number from your phone that allows you to just state the task. The notes can be retrieved by the same methods or be set to automatically ping you when a task needs to be done.

ReQall could be useful for any number of things, from reminders to pick up something at the grocery store to keeping tabs on what you need to do at work. Helpfully, it can also send reminders to others — for instance, if someone on your team also has an account, you can leave a note or reminder for them.

All is not perfect. Pictures are an essential memory aid, but so far, ReQall only integrates with Picasa albums; it needs its own picture storage to shine. The interface, also, could take a while to become familiar with, as it requires specific wordings to get ReQall to distinguish between different kinds of notes. As bad as our memories seem to be, they’re actually good enough that building a truly effective alternative is a challenging task.

The most difficult point for a memory program may be tying all our aids — calendars, notes, pictures and so forth — into one effective utility. ReQall already plugs into iCal and offers an RSS feed; in the future, Vemuri plans on opening an API so other developers can plug into the data.

ReQall has some serious competition, too. One of the best is Evernote, a note- and record-keeping tool that I reviewed last year. Evernote has so far been a Windows-only download, but is opening a web-based version in late March. Vemuri claims that his greatest competition is actually the post-it note, but if someone could merge the best features of both ReQall and Evernote, we might just have the perfect memory aid.

ReQall took a seed investment of $2.5 million back in 2006, from IT Ventures and Edge Ventures. It’s based in India, with offices in China and the USA.

ReQall goes iPhone

I don’t know have you got a chance to try ReQall, but it’s a neat web-based note taking application/service, which relies on multiple methods of input — SMS and voice included — to record your thoughts. Some things like images require direct uploading to ReQall, but once your notes are online, you can access them from ReQall’s website, iGoogle, RSS, and of course through your mobile phone’s web browser. And now, they’ve included iPhone/iPod Touch in the mix, allowing mentioned Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) products’ owners to check their notes wherever they are. Kinda neat, especially the part where you call the specified number and freely speak your thoughts which are afterwards transformed into written words. Now that I’m thinking, Jott does the similar thing…

Pros: Users are capable of leaving messages for themselves or others in order to jog their memory. Notifications can be sent via e-mail, text messages and even instant messaging services. There are Key Words that make sending notes simple and convenient.

Cons: reQall's audio notes are only 30 seconds in length. While that makes sense in a 'quick memory jogging' kind of way, I know that I would love to have longer notes. Also, the lack of Push notification is a definite downer. As easy as it is to receive text messages with my infiniteforever texting program, I'd prefer that the application be more standalone.

Bottom Line: As a memory-jogging application, reQall definitely brings Convenience to the table. The inclusion of audio transcription and sharing makes this application in a league of its own. Solely in the field of Note-Taking applications, however, I would prefer something with longer audio recording times, and I can't really predict how long this application will stick around. Evernote actually allows 60-second audio notes, and even allows users to upload an image they prefer from the iPhone. reQall is a great 'Reminder' application, however, and well worth at least one noble try.

There is no lack of memory-based services out there for the iPhone. Developers have jumped on the opportunity to use the iPhone as a tool to keep you up to date on your appointments and grocery shopping lists.

One app that does this very well is reQall. It still has its bugs and glitches, but it is a strong effort at what it seeks to do: create a multi-platform system for entering important items that you can later recall. You can enter notes via the web, text, IM, the phone, and of course through reQall itself.

One of reQall’s claims to fame is its ability to record a note and the service will transcribe it to text. The key is to talk…very…slowly. If you do, you will have a far greater chance that your note about “the meeting at 2:00” will actually state that in text.

Another great feature is that reQall will “choose” where to put an item: either on your to-do list, shopping list, your notes, or other categories. You can of course to enter notes through the iPhone, web interface, or even through a Firefox extension that gives you the ability to clip and copy text.

You also have control over how reQall notifies you about upcoming appointments. The service can text or e-mail you if you want a reminder. (No word yet if there is a plan for the kind voice of reQall to call you up when you are about to miss your dentist appointment). You can also subscribe to an RSS feed or sync your calendar reminders with any service that uses the iCal standards (like Google Calendar, Apple’s iCal or Microsoft Outlook).

Another section of reQall allows you to add a photo note. Say there is a person or object you would rather have a photo of, use your iPhone or Google Picasa library to upload a photo instantly. You can build an online database of important people or items for remembering later.
