Evernote 2010: A Year in Stats « Evernote Blogcast

We passed six million users! With remarkably good timing, our six-millionth user joined us just a few hours before midnight on New Year’s Eve. The chart below shows some other highlights.

As you can see in the table above, total users are up 186% for the year, from 2,096,030 to 6,003,130. December 2010 alone saw a 237% increase, with 2,089,705 unique users compared to 619,211 from December 2009. The largest percentage increase was in Premium users, they grew in 2010 from 35,310 to 201,308—a whopping 470%. This means that not only are we growing faster than ever, but that more of our users are coming back each month, and even more are choosing to pay. If you’re curious about what’s driving premium user acceleration, I talk about it a little in this LeWeb interview.

Evernote CEO Talks Android and iOS, iPhone Growth and Usage

The nice thing about the companies behind some of the most popular mobile applications, like Evernote, is that they get to see some interesting trends in the mobile space. Evernote CEO Phil Libin has seen tremendous growth with his app on the Android platform versus iPhone, and there may be some correlation with handset purchases and activations. Of course, it’s hard to say for sure, but at least we know that Android is catching up to the iPhone in terms of platform usage and app growth.

Libin says that in the last six months, Evernote downloads are up 1000% for Android, but only 150% for the iPhone. This puts the number of users on both Android and iOS platforms much closer to each other with the iPhone keeping a very marginal lead over Android.

As we saw in yesterday’s U.S. smartphone adoption forecasts, the Google mobile OS and iOS will have the lion’s share of the market by this time next year, virtually tying each other in terms of market share amongst smartphone users.

Top 15 Android Note-taking Apps: Rankings for December 2009 – January 2010

Top 15 Android Note Taking Apps
We kept track of the rankings of Android Note-Taking Apps over the past two months, and it is interesting to see how little changes. With the exception of the rise of 3banana and the fall of Evernote, very little has changed. Note that the graph shows the ranking within the Productivity category of the Android Market. Ranking does not correspond with actual number of users, because the higher ranked apps tend to have many more users than the lesser ranked apps, and the relationship is not linear. AK Notepad remains the top ranked notes app on Android and one of the highest ranked Android apps overall.

After a few months of beta releases, the all-inclusive note-taking service Evernote has launched a release version of its app for Android phones, making it very easy to snap pictures, jot notes or record audio notes for yourself.

The app’s smoothed out its kinks, bugs and looks over multiple beta releases, and does a fairly good job of integrating your Evernote account with your phone’s functions.

Evernote for Android — No Native App Yet

Evernote already has a native iPhone application and promises to release an Android client in the future. I actually contacted Evernote in early February to ask if they planned to develop a native app for Android and was told, “We do not currently have formal plans for an Android application and no definitive date has been set.”

I don’t know what has changed in the past 30 days since receiving that message, but I’m happy to know that an Android app is coming someday. I’ll be happy with an optimized Evernote Mobile for now, which is one of the tools I use on my G1 to increase my personal productivity.

We couldn’t have thought of a better way to end 2008: on New Year’s Eve, we officially closed a $4.5 million round of funding from Troika Dialog. That’s enough runway to keep us going strong into 2010 and, with a little more hard work, indefinitely. Our users deserve all the credit here: you told us how to make a great service and your obvious enthusiasm for Evernote is what got us this deal. Thank you! I’m officially taking a week off from worrying about money before going right back to securing some additional financing to fund our more ambitious plans (Evernote for Cats, Evernote Zero G, Evernote eXtreme Sportz Gel).

Androinica Review: Remember everything with 3banana Notes | Google Android Blog

Evernote’s G1-optimized website is only a few days old, but 3banana is already offering it competition in the note taking department. Though both products are good memory-aid services, 3banana has one advantage that Evernote currently doesn’t offer: native Android support.

3banana Notes is a free note-taking app that syncs between Android and an online account. The CEO of the company that developed the app explains it was created so “users could quickly jot down a thought or tag a photo on their Android smart phone with as few keystrokes as possible, and then sync and share those notes wirelessly and effortlessly.”

Users can snap a photo and then add a text note explaining its significance. That note can then be synced or shared with friends. A trip to the grocery could help you discover a new wine you’re not sure about purchasing, so snap a photo and attach the note “Look into this brand.” Interesting books, ideas gained from newspapers, sporting events, tech conventions, or any other situation could be cause to create a note that will help remember thoughts at a later time.

Aside from jotting down photo and/or text notes easily, 3banana can also:

  • Reverse sync so notes made on the computer appear on the Android phone
  • Label notes to provide category separation
  • Share notes via Facebook, Twitter, or E-mail.

3banana is available in the “Productivity” section of the Android Market. Register for an online account at 3banana.com

Evernote Discusses Vision, Security, Privacy — San Jose Mercury News

Q You do image recognition, handwriting recognition and you are working on audio recognition. How has technology advanced to make this possible not only in a browser but in a hand-held device?

A A bunch of things have happened. Recognition technologies have advanced a long way. A lot was done by Stepan and his team. He started a company called ParaGraph that focused on handwriting recognition and 3-D graphics. It was sold to Silicon Graphics. Then he started a few other companies, including ParaScript, which currently handles the reading of mail and checks in the United States and other countries.

Q What about networking and computing infrastructure?

A This whole service couldnt have worked five years ago. It would have been immensely hard to build something that automatically syncs to every single computer — either Mac or Windows, as well as to the Web and to different kinds of phones in real time — that had data stored on a data center in the cloud and locally on your computer or device and was reliable without you having to think about it.

Q Being someones brain is pretty personal. What kind of thinking has the company done about privacy?

A Quite a lot, and about security as well. It is really up to users to decide if they want the world to see all their thoughts, or if they want to keep things private, or if they want a mix. You can publish everything and you can synchronize everything, or you can use Evernote without synchronizing it and choose to encrypt everything and keep it encrypted somewhere on your hard drive. We support all that kind of stuff. Of course, you are compromising some kind of functionality if you only use Evernote on your computer. You cant effortlessly access your notes from anywhere and of course you cant share them with your friends.

Q What about the data itself?

A The first thing is, your memories are yours. Thats really important to us. We are not going to sell any of your information to advertisers or any third parties. And we are not going to charge you to get access to information. Any memory you have for the rest of your life, its yours. We have full import-export capabilities.

So why is it such a special tool you ask…why do I, as well as the majority of other Evernote users have so much passion & faith in the product. Well firstly, the company have been in the information business for a while now, they’ve built a solid reputation & it’s clear they aren’t going to dissapear without a fight. Secondly, they have a loyal user base which has only grown since they’re expansion onto the web. Thirdly, innovation – they have really mastered it & hopefully won’t be losing their touch any time soon.

With all the beauty of this innovative tool there are still things I’d like to see included:

1. Copy & Paste text from text in the images. Or the ability to literally see a txt version of the image if you see what i mean.

2. More media types – no not people – I mean audio, video, word docs, zip files etc..

3. Even better & faster OCR.

4. Ability to edit notes on the iphone – unfortunately you can’t currently edit previous notes on the iphone.

5. Sharing a notebook amongst peers/friends not publicly.

6. Know how many other people bookmarked the same link – possibly even be able to search for links similar to delicious – except without knowing who bookmarked what.

6. Tree like structure to folders or notebooks – so you have one notebook within another…although if you’re tag man person, you’ll be very comfortable.

Evernote Passes 500,000 Registered Users, Most of Them On The iPhone

Filed under: evernote — Tags: — sync @ 10:49 pm

Some apps wander around the wilderness for a while until they can find the perfect home. For Evernote, that home is the iPhone. The note-taking, picture-capturing, voice-recording, handwriting-recognizing universal memory service has been under development for years and launched last February in private beta on the PC. But it wasn’t until May 29 that it debuted on the iTunes store as an iPhone app. That’s when it started to take off.

Now Evernote has 512,000 registered users, who have created 13.8 million notes. In addition to the iPhone app, Evernote offers its service thorugh a PC client, a Mac client, a Website, and other mobile devices. The iPhone app is the most popular, being used 57% of the time. It is followed by the Web (51%), the PC client (32%), the Mac (28%), and other mobile clients bring up the rear (8%). These numbers add up to more than 100 because nearly half of all users access the service via more than one app.

The PC and Mac clients are the most fully-featured, yet it is the iPhone app that gave Evernote its critical mass. Perhaps that’s because the iPhone app lets you take pictures using the camera, append a note and save it to your Evernote page, where it is archived and searchable. It is more difficult to capture memories with a laptop.

Evernote and Eye-Fi Open Up New Possibilities for the Digital Camera

Evernote and Eye-Fi Open Up New Possibilities for the Digital Camera
Digital Snapshots Containing Text Can Be Instantly Captured, Synched and Made Searchable Across Desktops, the Web and Mobile Phones
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA and SUNNYVALE, CA —(December 10, 2008)— Evernote and Eye-Fi today announced a partnership to transform the digital camera into an essential tool for combating information overload and helping people remember everyday details. Users of Eye-Fi’s wireless SD memory card can now automatically upload photos from their digital camera directly into their Evernote accounts, where images containing printed or handwritten text will be indexed and made searchable.

Evernote, a service designed to help individuals remember everything, adds the images to the user’s collection of notes and memories and makes them available on their desktop, the Web or a mobile phone, where they can be searched and organized.

“Evernote helps consumers capture and search for anything they want to remember from their real and digital lives — from business cards and white board notes, to wine labels and receipts,” said Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote. “There has never been a simpler way to get high-quality images into Evernote than with a point-and-shoot digital camera. It literally takes one step: snap the photo and Eye-Fi does the rest automatically.”

Beginning today, users can benefit from the speed and simplicity of uploading hi-resolution photos through Eye-Fi and tap into Evernote’s convenience of searching and cataloging the images. Now, no extra steps are required between taking a picture and having it become automatically searchable through Evernote.

“Eye-Fi aims to make it easier to capture and share life’s memories,” said Jef Holove, CEO of Eye-Fi. “Now we’re helping people use their cameras to capture everyday information they want to remember. The combined power of Eye-Fi and Evernote means that now anyone who owns a digital camera can have a photographic memory.”

Eye-Fi’s products range from $79-$129 and can be purchased at Apple Retail Stores, Best Buy and major online retailers. Users can subscribe to Evernote at www.evernote.com. For more information, please visit www.eye.fi/evernote.

Evernote: Now Open to Everyone
Evernote Launches Public Beta of Popular Cloud and Desktop ‘Memory-Capturing’ Service; Offers Free and Premium Subscriptions
Sunnyvale, Calif., June 24, 2008 – Evernote, a web service with full-featured desktop and mobile clients designed to allow users to easily capture and find information, memories, and content in any environment, today announced its public availability and a new subscription model. Access to Evernote is now available to everyone, without the need for a prior invitation, on the Web, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Windows Mobile, and other mobile devices. Over 120,000 users have participated in Evernote’s invitation-only closed beta in the past four months.

Evernote allows users to capture information in any environment using virtually any device or platform, and makes this information accessible and searchable at any time, from anywhere. The product’s innovative recognition and synchronization technology allows users to capture their memories as text, snapshots, digital ink or audio and then easily find and share them. Printed and handwritten text within images is made fully searchable and all notes are automatically synchronized between the network and local devices.

In addition to opening up the service, Evernote also announced details of its new subscription pricing. Premium users will benefit from an expanded 500MB monthly upload allowance, priority access to image recognition servers, stronger security options, and premium support. Evernote will charge $5 per month, or $45 for a full year, for Premium service. Free users will get a 40MB monthly upload allowance and have access to all clients and tools. These limits apply only to information added in a given month, not to the total amount of data that a user can store.

The latest release also features a completely redesigned Evernote Web user interface and a new version of the company’s Web Clipper bookmarklet. The new Web Clipper allows users to instantly save the contents and links of a webpage into their Evernote accounts, a feature popular among bloggers, researchers, and online shoppers.

Other features include public notebook Facebook and blog integration, PDF support, encryption, and automatic synchronization of notes, to-do lists, snapshots, and audio notes among all Evernote clients. In recent weeks, Evernote has also released major upgrades to its Windows and Mac versions.

“Our goal is to make Evernote an extension of human memory. Since memorable things can happen at any time, online or in the real world, we realized that we needed to go beyond traditional web 2.0 and develop native clients for the major computer and phone platforms, in addition to a powerful web service. The response has been amazing,” said Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote. “Opening up the beta is a huge step for the company. We’re excited to introduce the world to Evernote, and we hope it becomes the place to store everyone’s memories for months, years, and decades to come.”

Hitachi To Bundle EverNote Software and Technologies With StarBoard Products
Customers To Benefit From EverNote’s Advanced Handwriting and Notetaking Tools
Sunnyvale, Calif., November 7, 2007 – EverNote® Corporation today announced a software licensing and bundling agreement with Hitachi®, which will see all new Hitachi StarBoard® interactive presentation and communications systems shipping with the entire suite of EverNote software and technology. Each StarBoard system will include ritePen® advanced handwriting recognition engine, EverNote notetaking productivity software, and a number of other EverNote technologies.

“StarBoard has been sold since 1998 and has been sold all over the world for education and business use. StarBoard enhances teaching, presentations and meetings and has been upgraded to fulfill customers’ needs,” said Yutaka Usuda, general manager of Hitachi Software Engineering. “StarBoard first met EverNote in 2006. We are so pleased that Hitachi takes advantage of EverNote, and provide their innovative technologies to our customers.”

By licensing and integrating EverNote ritePen into the StarBoard system, Hitachi enables its education and corporate customers to use their electronic whiteboards just as they would traditional ones — by writing freely and continuously directly on the surface—but with the additional benefit of full handwriting recognition. With ritePen, all information written to the StarBoard is captured, recognized and converted to clean text that can be used in various software applications, such as Microsoft® Word, Excel®, and PowerPoint®.

“Our goal at EverNote is to bring to market products and technologies that ease the burden of capturing and recalling information,” said Phil Libin, CEO of EverNote. “There is a kinship between our vision and that of Hitachi’s leading StarBoard products, which makes the technologies a perfect match. We are very excited to continue to support Hitachi with our embedded products and software bundles.”

In addition to ritePen, StarBoard systems will be bundled with EverNote notetaking software, an application designed for individuals who wish to capture, organize and later find various important information from their daily lives. Built using some of the same technology present in ritePen, EverNote enables consumers to create notes in numerous formats and then runs the notes through advanced recognition and indexing tools to make them all searchable—note types include text, handwriting, images with printed or handwritten text, as well as Internet and application clips. The bundling of EverNote note taking software marks an expansion of the EverNote relationship with Hitachi, which previously centered on embedded technologies.

EverNote 2.0 Released: Lets Users Search Inside Images For All Types of Text
Features New, Powerful Intelligent Search and Application Portability with EverNote Portable for Running on USB Drives
Sunnyvale, Calif., April 17, 2007 – EverNote® Corporation today announced the immediate availability of Evernote® 2.0, EverNote Plus 2.0, and EverNote Portable 2.0, the newest versions of its award-winning note taking and information capturing software.

EverNote Plus now includes unique AIR-Search® (Advanced Image Recognition) technology, available to the public for the first time, which allows users to search within photos, scanned images and graphics in their EverNote collections for printed and handwritten text. With EverNote Portable, users who need the ability to run EverNote on any PC without installing the application can install EverNote on a USB Drive and enjoy the ultimate in application and data portability. The company is also releasing the public beta of EverNote Outlook Extension, an application that runs inside Windows Outlook and integrates content from EverNote with Outlook software.

EverNote software provides a single place for capturing, categorizing, and instantly locating all kinds of information, such as typed and handwritten notes, web clips, emails, phone messages, addresses, passwords, brainstorms, sketches, photos and documents, and accessing them across multiple platforms and devices. EverNote 2.0 allows users to share their notes via portable devices, email and instant messengers, capture and categorize notes with new universal clipping and linking features, as well as safely encrypt notes for public or private accessibility. Additionally, EverNote Plus 2.0 includes synchronization of notes via removable media.

With the addition of AIR-Search, EverNote now provides the most sophisticated, seamless search capabilities for helping people to capture and find the digital things that they want to remember most. With AIR-Search, EverNote users can add images containing all types of text to their EverNote database and conduct a keyword search inside the image for recognizable text within labels, diagrams, snapshots of magazine and newspaper articles, nametags, signs, handwritten notes, and more. For example, if a user takes a snapshot of a whiteboard brainstorming session and saves it to EverNote, the text will be searchable by keywords and automatically categorized by the EverNote software as a handwritten note.

“AIR-Search is the first technology of its kind on the market,” said Stepan Pachikov, president and chief product architect of EverNote. “Now, anyone can simply capture an image with a camera phone and instantly search for text within the image. EverNote 2.0 is bringing an important part of our vision to marry image search with mobile devices and the Web to allow users to easily capture and memorize information in all of its formats, wherever it resides.”

In addition to AIR-Search and application portability, other highlights of EverNote 2.0 include:

New Universal Clipper: Available as an optional download, the Universal Clipper works in the background and adds to the EverNote tape’s selected portion of contents of the currently active desktop program. It also allows selecting and adding to the EverNote tape a snapshot of a portion of the screen.
Embedded To-Dos allow users to convert any note into a To-Do list on the fly.
Note Flags and Flag Categories provide a convenient note selection and markup tool.
New navigation functionality and shortcuts: Includes new Note List feature, enhanced scrolling, expanded auto categorization and new shortcuts to make EverNote even easier to use and navigate.
Updated Intelligent Multiple Categories: Categories for automatic filtering can be assigned by simply dragging and dropping information contained in notes. Additionally, Category Locator simplifies organization of notes by multiple categories.

Esther Dyson, Max Levchin Join EverNote Board of Directors

Esther Dyson, Max Levchin Join EverNote Board of Directors
Sunnyvale, Calif., August 7, 2006 – EverNote® Corporation today announced the appointments of Esther Dyson, editor of Release 1.0 for CNET Networks, and Max Levchin, CEO of Slide and co-founder and former chief technology officer of PayPal, to its board of directors. In a separate announcement today, EverNote announced the completion of $6 million in financing and the naming of Tom Garland as CEO.

EverNote is a pioneer in information capturing technologies, from groundbreaking digital ink and handwriting recognition technology to its popular personal content management application. Dyson and Levchin will help guide Evernote’s strategy as it brings new products to market to deliver on its vision of creating a “perfect memory for everyone.”

In addition to Levchin and Dyson, Evernote’s board of directors includes Tom Garland, CEO; Dr. Stepan Pachikov, founder and chief product architect; Dayan Henson, independent investor; and Ron Katz, private investor and chairman.

Katz and Pachikov bring a long history of creating and growing successful technology ventures. Together, they created $250 million dollars of shareholder equity and led the development and successful exits of ParaGraph, which pioneered digital-ink technology for the Apple Newton and was later acquired by SGI, and ParaScript, creator of image-processing technology still in widespread use today by the U.S. Postal Service.

“Both my life and my bank account have been enriched by Stepan Pachikov since I first met him in 1989,” said Dyson. “I was an investor in ParaGraph and ParaScript, and I’m delighted to have the chance to participate with him and his team more closely this time around. EverNote builds on the ideas and technical achievements of these earlier ventures. Our exciting challenge now is to develop a successful consumer product that extends across desktop, mobile and Web platforms and that feels like an extension of the person – a snap-on memory – rather than an external device.”

“The ways that consumers interact with, capture, store and access information is rapidly changing and EverNote has a novel approach to simplifying people’s everyday lives so that they can find and recall the things that matter most to them,” added Levchin. “The ideas and spirit of the company mirror much of what made PayPal and Slide successful – an unabated passion for solving hard problems and for putting needs of customers first. I look forward to working closely with the EverNote team to help guide its vision as it brings original, leading-edge software to the mass market.”

A technology industry veteran and respected expert, Dyson began her career with Forbes Magazine. In 1983, she acquired (from founder Ben Rosen) EDventure Holdings, a technology research firm that initiated the publication of Release 1.0, an influential technology industry newsletter. CNET Networks acquired EDventure in 2004 and Dyson became an editor at large at CNET Networks. She sits on the boards of several companies including Meetup.com, EVDB/eventful.com, IBS Group, Yandex and WPP Group. Dyson holds a degree in economics from Harvard University.

Levchin is a computer scientist and entrepreneur who co-founded and directed the technological development of PayPal. He has co-founded several other Internet and software companies, including NetMeridian Software, SponsorNet New Media and Yelp, an Internet company that allows users to share knowledge and recommendations on local attractions and destinations. Most recently, Levchin founded Slide, a San Francisco-based online media-sharing company. Originally from the Ukraine, Levchin moved to Chicago in 1991 and earned a degree in Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

“Max and Esther bring years of industry experience, thought leadership and an unmatched passion for groundbreaking technological innovations,” stated Ron Katz, Chairman of the Board, EverNote. “Their addition to Evernote’s board of directors will pay immediate dividends in terms of expanding the company’s network, and identifying and executing on new online opportunities for EverNote technology and ideas.”
